Bonded Warehousing in India: What Importers Should Know

Bonded Warehousing in India: What Importers Should Know

Bonded warehousing lets importers defer customs duty until goods actually leave the warehouse — a genuine cash-flow tool, if the compliance is right.

What bonding actually changes

Goods held in a licensed bonded warehouse are treated as not yet imported for duty purposes. Duty becomes payable only when the goods are cleared for home consumption, not when they land.

Who this benefits most

Importers holding large inventories against forecast demand, re-exporters, and businesses managing seasonal stock all benefit from not paying duty upfront on goods that may sit for weeks or months before sale.

The licensing and record-keeping burden

A bonded facility operates under a customs bond and requires meticulous stock records — every movement in, out, and within the warehouse must reconcile against the bond register. This is not a casual storage arrangement.

Partial clearance is normal practice

Importers routinely clear part of a consignment for home use while the balance remains bonded, paying duty only on the portion actually released. This is one of the more underused flexibility features of the bonded model.

Re-export without ever paying duty

Goods that are re-exported directly from bond never attract Indian import duty at all, which matters for trading businesses moving goods through India as a hub rather than a final destination.

Where general warehousing fits alongside bonded

Not every consignment needs bonded storage — general and palletised warehousing covers duty-paid stock, buffer inventory, and distribution staging. Knowing which model a given shipment needs is the first decision, before storage terms are even discussed. This is the core of our warehousing service.
