How to Clear Customs at JNPT: A Complete Importer's Guide

How to Clear Customs at JNPT: A Complete Importer's Guide

A step-by-step walkthrough of the JNPT customs clearance process — from filing the Bill of Entry through to Out of Charge.

Why JNPT clearance feels complex

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust handles a very large share of India's containerised trade. That volume means procedural discipline matters: a single mismatched field between your invoice, packing list, and Bill of Entry can hold a container for days. Most delays we see are documentation errors, not customs obstruction.

Step 1 — Pre-arrival documentation

Before the vessel berths, assemble the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and any licences your HS code attracts. Confirm the IEC is active and the AD Code is registered at the port of clearance. Getting the AD Code registration done in advance avoids one of the most common first-time importer hold-ups.

Step 2 — Filing the Bill of Entry

The Bill of Entry is filed on ICEGATE, usually by your Customs House Agent. Accuracy in HS classification drives your duty liability, so classification should be settled before filing rather than argued afterwards. Advance filing is possible once the IGM is lodged and generally shortens dwell time.

Step 3 — Assessment and duty payment

Customs assesses the declaration and computes duty. Where the system flags the consignment, it routes to an appraising officer for review. Duty is paid electronically, and the challan must reflect against the Bill of Entry before examination proceeds.

Step 4 — Examination and Out of Charge

Depending on risk profile, the container may be scanned or physically examined at the CFS. Once the officer is satisfied, Out of Charge is granted and the container can be released for delivery. Having a representative physically present at this stage materially shortens resolution when a query is raised.

Where an on-site partner changes the outcome

Because our team sits inside CWC Dronagiri Node, Nhava Sheva, queries that would otherwise take a day of phone calls get resolved in person the same session. That proximity is the difference between a container that moves on schedule and one that accrues detention — it's the foundation of our customs clearance and brokerage service.
